TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY FOR MANUFACTURE OF OXIDATION- RESISTANT
Gas and liquid phase catalytic oxidation of organic contaminants
using noble metal-impregnated, activated carbon catalysts is
highly efficient for deep oxidation (complete destruction) of a
wide range of contaminants. The technology has important
aerospace life support, environmental and industrial process
applications. The primary disadvantage precluding on-orbit and
more widespread commercial utilization of this technology is the
susceptibility of the carbon substrate to oxidation under process
conditions, resulting in degradation of the support over time.
Carbon catalyst supports are highly desirable because their
performance is several times greater than unsupported metals or
metals supported on alumina, zeolite, or any other material. The
purpose of this program is to develop low-cost methods to protect
the carbon support from oxidation by impregnating the catalyst
support with stabilizing compounds that protect the carbon from
being oxidized, while maintaining the high activity of the
catalyst. The result will be highly efficient, low mass/volume
oxidation catalysts that exhibit long operational lives and are
suitable for a wide range of applications.
It is important to stress that this is not another "proprietary"
catalyst development effort. It is a comprehensive treatment
process that can be used to dramatically improve the performance
of existing catalysts, as well as being used as the basis for new
catalytic applications that are currently too expensive (due to
catalyst loss) to be commercially viable.
This program will result in both a new technology for improving
existing process cost efficiencies and a new class of catalysts
for air and water treatment that will improve process economics
and provide a valuable tool for industrial process water and air
treatment, pollution control, environmental remediation, and
ultra-pure water production. Over 6,000 world-wide applications
