EMA Pressure Regulator
Marotta's phase I effort is an extension of leading edge technology
in closed loop electronic regulation technologies and capabilities
developed and/or acquired which is the result of 25 year of
development and innovations in the control of liquids and gases.
The electronic mechanical actuated regulator will incorporate
"platform technologies" and proven patent concepts while at the
same time combining new innovative technology. The phase 1 effort
will establish the analysis and test specific design elements that
will permit the phase 2 effort to result in an electromechanical
pressure regulator and controller suitable for use in small
chemical space propulsion systems and other similar applications.
The Marotta EMA regulator contains an integrated motor differential
ball screw to position a valve element in response to pressure
transducer feedback signal to maintain the pressure setpoint. NASA
will benefit as follows from this development:
*Remote, or pre-programmed, adjustable pressure setpoint.
*One design can fulfill many different pressure applications,
thereby increasing product demand and reducing cost.
*No pressure overshoot occurs during "slam start". Outlet pressure
is electronically ramped to setpoint.
*Eliminates need of bellows, diaphragms and piston controllers and
their associated reliability problems and reduces costs.
*Weight savings in tanks, pressure vessels and structures due to
tighter control of pressure requirements.
The Marotta Scientific Controls, Inc., (MSCI), EMA pressure
regulator proposed in response to the small chemical space
propulsion system (11.5) gaseous storage and pressurization systems
includes basic design concepts having several commercial market
potentials. Included in these is potential for
commercial/industrial applications for space and other industrial
requirements listed as follows:
1. Commercial space launch vehicles and satellites.
2. Hydraulic/pneumatic contact functions in the basic metal
industries (steel and aluminum).
3. Chemical processes and environmental industries.
